Ok, so we've stayed in a couple of campsites now (and on 1 porch) and by now I've managed to gather some information about mosquitoes.

Since they will ALWAYS* find you, here's what I've learned about protecting yourself:

  • Bug spray doesn't work long - it'll confuse them for about 10mins, then you're back to swatting at them.
  • Talking of which, swatting only helps against the threats you notice (but killing one is satisfying).
  • Washing in a glacial creek lowers your skin temperature enough so you won't be bothered (but isn't recommended as a general solution).
  • A smoky fire seems to keep the majority at bay but isn't foolproof and can, depending on wind direction, inhibit breathing and leaves a residual smell.
  • Waterproof gear isn't just useful against rain but functions as a mosquito proof layer as well.

Therefore, although we've been really lucky with the weather (only really rain some nights or evenings), I've been wearing my rain gear far more often than I'd like. I've received a few odd looks from other campers when I sit there in my rain jacket and trousers under a blue sky in 25 degree weather, but what do they know?

*'always' includes at nearly 2000m when you're cycling up the mountain too slowly.
